Overview of the Sport Softball Essay - 862 Words

George Hancocks first intention was to come up with a way for baseball players to stay in practice during the winter. Instead, on September 16, 1887 in Chicago, he invented a whole new sport, the first version of softball. It was referred to then as just Indoor Baseball. The first game of baseball consisted of a boxing glove tied into a ball and a broom handle which was used as the bat. After the game was successful with a score of 44-40, Hancock developed a ball and a bat that could be used to play the game. The new sport was moved outside the next year. Another version of softball came about when Lewis Rober, Sr. organized an outdoor game to be used as exercise for firefighters. If the third strike is caught by the catcher, then the batter is out. There are a few techniques and fundamentals that can be used during the game of softball. First of all, always make sure that you touch the bases while running toward the home base. Also, you should watch the ball every moment while on a base. Maintain a loose grip on the bat while batting and accelerate as you are hitting. It would also help to keep the bat as far back as you can get it for more momentum. Always keep your eye on the ball as it comes towards you. Equipment that is required for softball consists of a ball, a bat, gloves, and protective gear such as a helmet and chest protector for the defensive catcher. The ball used in softball is not soft and it varies in size with circumferences from 11-12 in. The bats are metal or wooden and are no mor e than 34 in. long, 2.25 in. in diameter, or 38 oz in weight. The gloves are used by all defensive players and are usually made of leather or similar materials. They are generally larger than ones used in baseball. The catcher must wear a protective helmet with a facemask and throat protector. A female catcher must wear a body protector. For 16 inch softball, protective gear of any kind is generally not worn.
